TOPIC: “Current Efforts to Enhance Information Privacy and Security - superheroes at UNB to battle cyber crime and cyberspace villains”

Event Overview

Dr. Ghorbani will discuss his work as Director of the UNB Information Security Centre of Excellence, a lab for graduate students to test, research and develop technology to fight computer viruses, hackers and network attacks. This lab is the new headquarters for Internet superheroes at UNB to battle cyber crime and cyberspace villains. The Center is a joint project between Q1 Labs, the University of New Brunswick, and the Government of Canada. Dr. Ghorbani will also discuss his Information and Network Security (INS) research group. Research projects in the group focus on various aspects of information and network security. Currently, the group is mainly focused on network survivability and intrusion detection & response systems.

Greg Sprague will discuss two exciting IT privacy and security related events being held back to back in Fredericton this fall! HTCIA Professional Development Day (September 30, 2008) is a one day IT Security Training event that will be of special interest to all IT professionals who to deal with Privacy and Security issues. Privacy Security & Trust Research Conference (PST2008 October 1-3, 2008) provides a three day forum for researchers from around the globe to present their latest work and for the private sector to explore collaboration opportunities with the research community. It also includes the Atlantic Privacy & Security Summit (October 1, 2008) which this year addresses privacy and security issues related to information sharing and electronic records in healthcare.

Dr. Ghorbani is the chair of PST2008. Greg Sprague is helping to organize both events.

Ali Ghorbani, BSc(Tehran), MSc(CS) (GWU), Ph.D. (UNB)

Ali A. Ghorbani has held a variety of positions in academia for the past 28 years. Since 1991 he has been at the faculty of Computer Science, University of New Brunswick (UNB), Fredericton, Canada, where he is currently a Professor and Assistant Dean (Research & Outreach). He holds UNB Research Scholar position, co-Editor-in-Chief of Computational Intelligence, an international journal, and Associate Editor of International Journal of Information Technology and Web Engineering. His current research focus is Web intelligence, Network Security, complex adaptive systems, trust & security, and Critical Infrastructure Protection. He authored more than 220 reports and research papers in journals and conference proceedings and has edited 8 volumes. He was Guest Editor for a number of Special Issues, General Chair and Program Chair/co-Chair for 6 International Conferences, and organized over 10 Workshops in conjunctions with International Conferences.


Dr. Ghorbani is the Director of Information Security Centre of Excellence (www.ISCX.ca). He is also the coordinator of the Privacy, Security and Trust (PST) network, University of New Brunswick. In ISCX, researchers, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students work on research projects that will advance the current state of threat detection algorithms, attack simulation, correlation techniques, network application discovery, Privacy and Trust and Critical Infrastructure Protection.

Greg Sprague, BSc(UNB), MSc(CS) (UNB)

Greg has more than 30 years experience as an ICT manager in industry, academia and the public sector. Greg joined NRC IIT from UNB where he was the Executive Director of Integrated Technology Services. Prior to that he was an Assistant Vice-President (Academic) at UNB and taught Management Information Systems in the Faculty of Administration. Greg started his career with IBM and has also served as the Director of Computing at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania.

Greg has published papers in the fields of information literacy, computer simulation, local area networking, and multimedia. He holds the Canadian Information Processing Society's ISP designation (Information Systems Professional of Canada) and is a member of the High Technology Crime Investigation Association (HTCIA).
